Ukraine will not be able to simultaneously join the Customs Union and establish a free trade zone with the EU.
This was stated by the President of European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said after talks with President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovich. "It is impossible to integrate into the Customs Union and at the same time have an in-depth and comprehensive free trade zone with the EU", – said the European officials.
At the same time Barroso admits the possibility of the existence of instruments of cooperation between Ukraine Customs Union. "Of course, for Ukraine it would be very difficult to negotiate a deep and comprehensive FTA with the EU, if it acceded to the Customs Union countries that have preferential trade agreements with the EU", – he stressed. According to Barroso, Ukraine has every right to sign trade agreements are those that meet its economic interests.
