The Dutch government will issue in 2012 on applications of Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area, after a trial period, the Immigration Minister announced Thursday, Gerd Leers, quoted by AFP.
“It’s still too early to make a decision and no doubt this will take a while, until we be able to do,” he said, a day after the European Parliament vote in favor of joining the two countries, EU member states in 2007.
To integrate a new country requires a unanimous vote of the 26 member countries of the Schengen Area. Three EU countries, Britain, Ireland and Cyprus have decided to remain outside of this space, instead, joined by Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, countries that are not part of the EU.
“We urge the new countries to effectively control their common borders andit is imperative that judicial reforms in Bulgaria and Romania to be effective and irreversible , “said the Dutch minister.
Governments of member countries of the Schengen Area awaits European Commission report on reforms in justice and fight against corruption in Romania and Bulgaria, to be published in July.
“We will study this report carefully,” Leers said, before outlining the government’s decision and will take “some time”. The trial period should last until the next Commission report in 2012, said sources in the Netherlands.
