The European Union will begin negotiations with Albania and Montenegro about their membership.

 

The European Commission recommends starting negotiations with Albania and Montenegro to join the European Union immediately after the performance of some necessary criteria.
 
Albania, in particular, has to make a reform of the electoral law, develop a global strategy for judicial reform, improve the fight against corruption and organized crime, reduce the budget deficit, improve the investment climate, strive to improve balance and reduce unemployment, to adopt legislation for the protection of human rights and human minorities – according to the European Commissions’ opinion.
 
On the occasion of Montenegro – it should pay special attention to the implementation of legislation adopted, particularly in the sphere of civil administration, police, judiciary, to fight against discrimination, to strengthen the fight against corruption and organized crime. In addition, Montenegro has to improve legislation in the banking system, change approaches to training qualified professionals in order to reduce unemployment, improve energy and transport infrastructure.

European Commission has also noted that negotiations about Croatia’s joining to the EU are on the final stage.
The Commission reiterated its recommendation to begin negotiations with Macedonia and confirmed the perspective of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo in joining the European Union.
